Why it's important to make your school system accessible

As you start planning for the 2018-2019 school year, it may be the perfect time to evaluate how accessible your campus is for all students, especially if the building is older. To help you determine where you can make improvements and suggestions to do so, here are a few tips to help you get started.

Access: Whether your school has outgrown its building, it was built before the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), or you’re simply in need of a new solution, we can help! All students must be provided the same access whether they have a disability or not, including access to a theater stage and portable buildings. Our PATHWAY® HD Code Compliant Modular Access System is durable and adaptable to fit where you need it.

It’s All in the Details: Sometimes it’s the little things that are overlooked and that’s understandable, but to someone who lives with a disability, the difference between feeling included and being forgotten could be that little, overlooked detail. Here are some tips to remember:

  1. Leave a lower coat or backpack hook for wheelchair users.
  2. Make sure heavy doors have automatic openers and that they properly work.
  3. Classroom furniture should be arranged so that students can easily move throughout the room.

Playgrounds: Students shouldn’t have to be sidelined from playing and interacting with their peers due to their disability. If you’re considering a playground reconstruction, consider using a hard rubber surface so it’s easier to navigate on wheels compared to rocks and woodchips. Design a playground with wide ramps and platforms and possibly a platform swing so that all students can play together and easily access each area of the playground.
