Summer is here, the sun’s shining bright, and the weather is warm and inviting — it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy all that nature has to offer! However, as we age, it is important to engage in activities that are safe and low-impact to avoid potential injuries. Here are some of our favorite senior-friendly activities to keep you moving and having fun this summer.

Outdoor Exercise:  Exercising outdoors is a great way to soak up the sun and enjoy some fresh air while also getting a good workout. Walking is one of the best exercises for seniors, and it can be done anywhere, from a local park to a nature trail. This low-impact exercise helps to strengthen the bones, improve balance, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Low-Impact Sports:  Low-impact sports are an excellent way to stay active without putting too much stress on the body. Some of our favorite low-impact sports include:

·        Golf

·        Pickleball

·        Shuffleboard

·        Bocce ball

·        Badminton

·        Frisbee golf

These sports are not only fun, but they also help to improve balance, flexibility, and coordination.

Group Activities:  Group activities provide an exciting opportunity to meet new people, stay motivated, and have fun while staying active. Many community centers offer group exercise classes that are suitable for all levels, such as yoga and tai chi, which are great for improving balance and flexibility and for reducing stress. Joining a local birdwatching group is also a fun way to meet new people and stay active. Check out your local parks and recreation department for information about specific group activities in your area!

Water Fun:  Water activities are a great way to stay cool and active during the summer months. Swimming and water aerobics are excellent low-impact activities that are easy on the joints and can be done both indoors and outdoors. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding are also delightful water sports that can be done alone or with a group.

In conclusion, staying active is important at any age, but it is especially important for seniors. By participating in safe, low-impact activities, seniors can stay healthy and active all summer long. No matter what type of activity you choose, remember to stay safe by wearing the appropriate gear, staying hydrated, and avoiding extreme temperatures. Enjoy your summer and stay active!
